Pursue the bait laid out to fool TF 58.00 in the form of two carriers. The late strike placed much of the USN’s aircraft at risk of landing in the dark. Taking a chance, Mitchner ordered the carriers lighted for the aircrews to recover.

Depart from USS Belleau Wood and fly en route on autopilot attack enemy carriers. Return via autopilot and look for LSO Belleau Wood to trap after dark.
